14/04/2010 Specialist car manufacturer Marlin Sportscars have produced a unique mechanical handbrake assembly that makes it possible to fit floating piston aluminium (or steel) brake calipers (Willwood, Brembo, etc) to the rear wheels of kitcars, production cars or hot hatches. Until now, the legal and practical requirement for an independent mechanical handbrake has meant that anyone using rear disc brakes has had to retain the bulky and weighty OE system. And those in motorsport, who have opted for the weight-saving and high performance of aluminium calipers, have been forced to fit separate additional mechanical calipers - at considerable extra cost and weight. The new Marlin mechanical handbrake assembly allows the fitment of any make of after-market or OE caliper to the rear wheels - and it can be retro-fitted, so anyone who has been forced to go for a compromise handbrake arrangement can now replace it with this ingenious, lightweight, alternative. It can be fitted to any two or four-pot, and most six-pot, calipers to provide a cable-operated handbrake, independent of the hydraulic system. And it’s self-adjusting. “Not having an independent handbrake unit to use with rear brake calipers has long been a problem - for us and other kitcar manufacturers, but also for specialist sportscar manufacturers, hot hatch owners and many people in motorsport,” said Mark Matthews. “Our new system solves the problem simply, legally and at minimum cost and weight.”
